Belgian Artists in Spain

The Leading Thread (El Hilo Conductor) is the current exhibition at the Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos (CAB), in northern Spain, where seven Flemish artist are presenting their work. Wanting to offer an overall picture of contemporary art in Flanders, the Spanish center invited David Claerbout, Anouk De Clercq , Geert Goiris , Valérie Mannaerts, Hans Op de Beeck , Helmut Stallaerts and Hannes Van Severen. All of them quite young, some of them are already recognized internationally.

The immediate cause for this exhibition is the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Philip the Handsome. This duke of Burgundy was born in Bruges (Belgium) and deceased in Burgos (Spain). The title of the exhibition refers to the thriving wool trade between Flanders and Castile five centuries ago. "Our two territories are situated at the end of a thread of wool, each with its own personality and its strong cultural and historical identity", says CAB-director and curator Emilio Navarro. In those early days, it was the wool trade that brought these regions closer together. Now, it is contemporary art that strengthens the ties between the two.
