The sculptures by Isabelle Dethier swing between mass and weightlessness, multitude and uniqueness, hesitation and flight. She works opposed to and with different subjects which are brought together in “one vital energy”. The work rises, is inspired and suggested by the shapes observed in nature. This is an individual perception that enlightens reflections of our own emotions.
The Forest: cherry, chestnut, pear, willow, elder, wild cherry, lime trees… These sculptures are made cutting directly the mass, after polishing with chain saw.

The artist explains that “the wood comes mainly from Europe and particularly from my region or, even more precisely, from my garden. The first wooden works (from 1992 on) were fit together when the wood was already dried-up and then worked, but on the contrary the most recent works were carved on green wood, intentionally cut for later seasoning. From experience, we can thus foresee the defects and sculpt thereof”.
Isabelle Dethier is environmentally conscious when choosing materials for her artwork. She works now primarily with wood, but only wood from ill or already fallen trees in or around her own garden and thus wood which has not been cut down merely for the creation of artwork. Born in Weybridge (Surrey, UK) in 1958, Dethier has developed her career in different European countries and set her residence in Belgium since 1997.
